An additional $80,000 in required matching monies has also been secured via generous private donations. These funds will support Phase 1 of our effort to restore the Tavern. This initial step will provide a new roof... a restored porch... and a functionally restored Veranda Room. The work will begin this Fall with a completion goal of a few months.
 
This marks the first major restoration of the Tavern in 100 years! We appreciate the support of our members.... volunteers.... project partners.... and corporate sponsors.

August 2, 2016 - "Unionville Tavern Preservation receives grant" ~Star Beacon http://www.starbeacon.com/news/local_news/unionville-tavern-preservation-receives-grant/article_ccddb433-03ef-5be4-865e-5f464376906b.html]]><![CDATA[From the Board...]]>Tue, 14 Jul 2015 15:51:17 GMThttp://www.savethetavern.org/blog/from-the-board1The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society is consulting with Heritage Architectural Associates, of Wheeling, West Virginia, to create the Historic Structures Report and Master Plan (HSRMP), as the organization moves forward with its efforts to protect the 217 year old tavern.   The HSRMP is an essential step in the historic preservation process to assess the historic Tavern, develop a plan moving forward, and ultimately, restore and revitalize The Old Tavern. 

The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society is proud to announce that the organization has received a grant from The Robert S. Morrison Foundation, of Ashtabula, to initiate the HSRMP, on behalf of the effort to "Save the Tavern!" The Morrison Foundation has awarded $9,695 for the initial phase of the report, which is intended to document the existing conditions of the building.  Additionally, we received a matching grant of $4113 from the Johanna Favrot Fund through the  National Trust For Historic Preservation.  This grant will help to fund a later portion of the HSRMP. 

We are honored to receive recognition on both the  local  and national level.  We are excited to begin the next phase of the project and appreciate your continued support.

]]><![CDATA[Ursuline College Students Complete Course Work at The Old Tavern]]>Fri, 03 Apr 2015 14:41:52 GMThttp://www.savethetavern.org/blog/ursuline-college-students-complete-course-work-at-the-old-tavernWhen we began talking about our goals as an organization we all agreed that education should be a part of our mission.  Therefore, we are excited for the opportunity to work with Historic Preservation students from Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio.  This spring we will help 2 students complete course work both at the Tavern and through observation and participation in our organizations activities.  Gail Peabody, a Graduate student, will complete a Conditions Assessment project at the Tavern and then present her findings to our board and her class.  Also joining us is Clay Fellows (of Unionville), a freshman, who will complete his “First Year to Career” micro-internship by shadowing members of our board and participating in organizational activities.  Clay has been visiting the Madison Historical Society in the last few weeks in his research into the Tavern history as part of his assignment, which will then be displayed during the upcoming Flea Market in Unionville.

On May 9th, the Unionville Boosters will hold their annual Around the Block Flea Market from 9-4.  After attending the Flea Market for the past couple years as advocates for the Tavern, we are excited to be promoting the Tavern at the Tavern!  We are planning an event within an event to demonstrate the Tavern as a viable destination in the community by highlighting the Taverns' past, present, and envisioned future as well as share our organizations information and raise funds.  In essence, we want to show new life at the Tavern.   We hope you will stop by the Tavern while searching for treasures in Unionville on May 9th!]]><![CDATA[From The Board...]]>Tue, 04 Nov 2014 13:24:33 GMThttp://www.savethetavern.org/blog/from-the-boardThe Unionville Tavern Preservation Society has been working non-stop, since acquisition, towards stabilizing the Tavern before winter. Due to the acquisition occurring later in the year, we have been working against the calendar to complete numerous site surveys, retain a contractor and an architect, craft the stabilization program, file for permits, prepare the grounds and remove a large maple tree threat. We have made great progress in a short period of time. While some of these efforts have been initiated and completed, we are currently awaiting the county's approval of the permit to proceed with work to stabilize the roof and porch thru the winter. These efforts are directed at protecting the building from additional damage. Time and weather will determine how much work will be completed at this point... and time is of the essence. We will make every effort to get as much stabilization work completed as possible. Next year, we will move forward with more definitive efforts to secure the roof and ideally, the front porch. ]]><![CDATA[Master Gardeners visit the Tavern gardens]]>Tue, 09 Sep 2014 13:00:37 GMThttp://www.savethetavern.org/blog/master-gardeners-visit-the-tavern-gardensMaster Gardeners from Lake County and Ashtabula County visited the Tavern and toured the gardens.  Together they identified plants as historic, healthy/need some rehab, invasive and/or needs removed, and weed.  We discussed the future plans for the garden and developed an action plan to get started.  Thank you to the Master Gardeners who came out to help assess the gardens.  We look forward to taming the gardens and nurturing a beautiful outdoor space!

We have waited so long to get our hands dirty and begin to take care of the Tavern.   While we wait for a visit from the Building Doctors, members of the Board and our families met at the Tavern to pull some weeds and remove the ivy from the garden wall.  We enjoyed talking and waving to the well wishers who past by as we worked.  Many of you have offered to help take on this task.

Today we announced we had purchased The Old Tavern through negotiations with the previous owner.   We are overwhelmed by the positive feedback from the community.  We enjoyed sharing our news with all those who have followed our journey, made donations, and helped us along the way.   It is because of community involvement that we achieved this goal.  Together WE are the Tavern!  We are so grateful for your support.  We look forward to sharing our progress with you as we continue on with our mission to preserve and protect The Old Tavern.

A piece of Tavern returns to Unionville!  Lowell Keairns is the grandson of Arthur and Hulda Fritz who owned the Tavern from 1925-1946.  Lowell explains to the crowd gathered that this arrow used to be in the garden at the Tavern and was used during the times of the Underground Railroad.  The story goes that when the arrow pointed North, it was safe for runaway slaves to enter the Tavern.  Slaves could enter the Tavern through underground tunnels that began under a false headstone in the Alexander Harper Cemetery, under what is now Route 84 and into the basement of the Tavern.  We are so grateful Lowell for his donation to the Unioville Tavern Preservation Society.  We will loan the arrow to the Madison Historical Society to be put on display for the community.
]]><![CDATA[A Visit From Preservation Ohio]]>Sat, 29 Mar 2014 15:26:53 GMThttp://www.savethetavern.org/blog/a-visit-from-preservation-ohioOn March 29, The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society arranged a visit from Preservation Ohio to the Tavern.  The group was able to see first hand the deteriorated condition of the building that they have listed on their "Ohio's Most Endangered Site" list for the past 2 years.  We were able to discuss their thoughts on the condition of the building as well as its potential to be revived.  Their visit was brought to the attention of Channel 3 News in Cleveland who interviewed both Erin Cicero from TUTPS and Marian Vance from Preservation Ohio.  The story about the Tavern and the Save The Tavern! effort was aired on Sunday March 30, 2014 during the 6 o'clock news.
