August 20, 2012 - We are excited to announce that the Old Tavern is one of twelve sites in the state of Ohio recognized by Preservation Ohio as Most Endangered! Preservation Ohio complies a list annually to raise public awareness about historic sites with unsure futures. We are excited that the Old Tavern has made this years list. We hope that the additional publicity will be beneficial to the fate of the Tavern. For more details on the 2012 Most Endangered Sites list and Preservation Ohio visit http://preservationohio.com.
August 20, 2012 - Our efforts have made front page news for the August 20, 2012 edition of the Ashtabula Star Beacon. If you can't make it to the news stand to pick up your printed copy, check out the on-line version of the article on the Star Beacon website. As advocates for the preservation of the Old Tavern, we are working hard to ensure it's existence for future generations. You can find out more information on our efforts under About Us. Please check out our Upcoming Events page for more details about the Madison Historical Society 18th Home Tour and "Madison Sampler" Tea Room mentioned in the article. August 20, 2012 - We want to congratulate Harriette Hydinger of Harpersfield for winning our summer raffle! Harriette and her husband had their wedding rehearsal dinner at the Tavern in 1971. Harriette has received a set of dishes used at the Tavern during the 1930's and 1940's when the Tavern was owned and operated by Arthur and Hulda Fritz.
The dishes were donated to The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society by Lowell Keairns, grandson of Arthur and Hulda, for us to use to help raise funds for our efforts. The money raised from the sale of raffle tickets went towards fees associated with hosting the August 4th presentation by Cathy Nelson of the Friends of Freedom Society, Inc - Ohio Underground Railroad Association. Thank you to all those who purchased tickets! Ella Pike, an 8-1/2 year old resident in Unionville, has written a letter pleading with the owner to fix up the Tavern. I hope that her message will be heard!
We drew the winner for the dishes that were used in the Tavern during 1930's and 1940's. We have left a message with the winner but have not received a call back. Check your answering machine...it could be you! If we have not heard back from the winner soon, we will be drawing for a new winner. STAY TUNED!
Thank you to all those who stopped by our booth during Madison Old Fashioned Days. We enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the Tavern and sharing our hopes for the future. During the event we had the opportunity to host a guest speaker. Cathy Nelson of the Friends of Freedom Society gave an excellent presentation on Ohio's Underground Railroad and such influential sites as the Old Tavern.
Before her presentation we were able to take her to see the Tavern. Cathy last visited the Tavern over 10 years ago. Although we had been describing the severity of the damage to the structure, she was still not fully prepared for what she saw when we drove into Unionville. Cathy took her time walking around the building, peeking in the windows, and taking pictures. Although she was obviously saddened and upset by the neglect she saw during her visit, she believes the Tavern is not yet a lost cause and is worth fighting to save. Cathy made that point very clear during her presentation and inspired several of those who attended to join our group as Friends of the Old Tavern. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE... The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society is pleased to announce that we have partnered with the Madison Community Improvement Corporation (MCIC) in our effort to "Save the Tavern".
The two organizations are committed to working together to help preserve this historic local landmark. The MCIC has offered to establish a fund through its tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 status which will allow individuals or groups to make donations and receive a tax benefit. The MCIC will maintain the account, while the Preservation Society will oversee the use of the funds on behalf of our effort to save the Old Tavern. Our joint effort will allow us to send charitable donation letters for donations and memberships, as well as provide us with additional community resources and support. Please make checks for memberships and donations to “MCIC – Save The Tavern”. You can continue to send memberships and donations to Save The Tavern, P.O. Box 826, Madison, Ohio 44057. We feel this partnership will greatly help in our efforts as we move forward. We are excited for the collaboration and hope you will join us in continuing the effort to Save The Tavern! |
