Thank you to all those who stopped by our booth during Madison Old Fashioned Days. We enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the Tavern and sharing our hopes for the future. During the event we had the opportunity to host a guest speaker. Cathy Nelson of the Friends of Freedom Society gave an excellent presentation on Ohio's Underground Railroad and such influential sites as the Old Tavern.
Before her presentation we were able to take her to see the Tavern. Cathy last visited the Tavern over 10 years ago. Although we had been describing the severity of the damage to the structure, she was still not fully prepared for what she saw when we drove into Unionville. Cathy took her time walking around the building, peeking in the windows, and taking pictures. Although she was obviously saddened and upset by the neglect she saw during her visit, she believes the Tavern is not yet a lost cause and is worth fighting to save. Cathy made that point very clear during her presentation and inspired several of those who attended to join our group as Friends of the Old Tavern.
